The fast bowler Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in the Ashes

Australian cricket captain

Pat Cummins has claimed 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

There were concerns that Cummins might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in Western Australia.

He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about the likelihood of being involved.

"We know that the clock is ticking and there are permutations at play, not just the physical problem, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he will feature a significant role. Hopefully starting in Perth. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against New Zealand and India recently after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of back injuries, with recurrences in multiple past seasons causing him to miss several home seasons in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to make the squad for the contest.

He mentioned that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from the national team for their ODI contests against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.

He labeled it as a "small issue and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches in any case. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for a short period, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
