The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States on five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
This row threatens to become part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.
